Post Our Annual Barra Trip ! Each year gets Better
G'day guys ,
I've been a bit slack but we've been back for a a week & a half so I thought I'd put up some random pics of some of the fish caught this year !! This trip just keeps getting better every year , with every angler bagging a barra . We started at Lake Cania fishing for Bass for 2 days & it was a different place this year being 100% full . We found that daybreak & dusk was really where we had sucess with about a dozen or so caught between us with some good size ones to take to awoonga with us for our hosts Mark & Lynn at Awoonga Gateway Lodges to cook up a feast for us once again . Every year they cook us up a storm & this year we had 3 seperate feasts 8-) 8-)
Lake Cania 100 % full

I was a bit slack with the camera this year & this photo was an after thought when we realised we hadn't taken any pics of the Bass

He was the only one left that we hadn't filleted & feeling a bit off colour ;)
to be cont .

After 2 days at Cania it was off to Awoonga to tackle the Barra !! We had heard that fishing in both Awoonga & Monduran was extremely tuff with many anglers fishing for a week & going home without a touch so it was always gunna be a challenge . We got there on the saturday & hit the lake after settling in at the lodges . The lake temp was 25 degrees and we put in a very solid arvo's fishin without a touch . Very big fish were showing up on the sounder but we just couldn't get them interested :( Next day we spent a huge day on the lake with the same result . before we pulled the pin I recorded a few trolling runs for later that night . Again another big night for donuts ! again they were showing up but not interested . Pauly had been up there a week longer than the rest of us & he and young Marty had dropped a couple in the local rivers so the decision was made to hit the local rivers big time . Well what a great decision that turned out to be !! 8-) 8-) Between us we manage to bag 38 Barra !!! for the remainder of the week to have by far the best trip we've had up there !! The sizes were every thing from 45 cm to the longest 1.25 meter . Now I will qualify that my record on barra for the week was very poor & my reputation as a leading member of the FFFC is intact   I only managed to land 1 barra for the week & dropped christ only knows how many   Where as Roger & Deiter managed double figures with 10 each !! For Roger it was all the more special having caught all his on his home made soft plastics Great effort & I would think extremely rewarding . It wasn't all bad for me having a good time on the bass & when we hit the saltwater had a good catch rate on the various reef fish . We also had a couple of great evenings in one of the salty rivers landing about 10 mangrove jacks 8-)

Bit of a story with the big 1.25 Barra ! As you can see ,he's a bit battle scarred !! One of best sensations of this trip was to actually be able to get out of the boat & walk the backwaters & shallows of the river sight casting barra .This big bugger was stuck in a very small backwater of only about 2 feet of water & the boys decided to cast at it to see what would happen . the poor bastard was in a rifle range with lures shootin everywhere & in the end it was purely a lure by Deiter that actually dragged across him & it stuck   so they done the right thing & wound him in took some happy snaps & relocated him to a much deeper part of the river 8-) 8-) The anticipation & thrill of being able to see your fish & entice it into taking your lure was awesome . At one stage I'd seen a barra in the backwater of the next pic & in trying to cast a bit further got myself a nice old birdsnest  So I watched my white frog sink to the bottom in about 4 ft of water & left it there whilst I fixed the birdsnest , 5 mins later I've fixed it up & started winding , with the water so clear I could actually see the lure come up of the bottom & then a barra come in & smash it !!! As usual I dropped him
You can see Deiter in this pick trying to get his lure back . A minute after this he actually hooked up in water up to his chest :P

Great report mate, gunna go on 1 of these trips 1 day, just gotta get Gayle to win Tattslotto first or retire, what ever comes first. So I gather you were all pretty confident that there were no crocs in these creeks? Or don't they get 'em that far south?
