I purchased a humminbird Piranha portable about 5 years ago ($210 AU delivered from the USA) & it is still going ok...gave it to the father in law for his tinny as I now have a HDS 5.
Obviously you get what you pay for so don't expect too many arches to appear on the screen  it's more of a useful tool in terms of identifying structure & depth.

I have a couple of humminbird sounders if someone wants to buy them, one is a Matrix 37, with 2 transducers, and 2 swivel base's (I had it set up in both my tinny's, just slot it into the base. Its a few years old, and the transducer cord is separating from the transducer, but it still works 100%. $160
The other is a Pirahna max 220 or something like that, its only a couple of years old, but was rarely used as I had it set up in my canoe. $120
Both sounders include delivery charges thru Aussie post.
