LOWER MURRAY LURE FISHING CLUB – Cadell Summer Session 26th Feruary 2012 event report

The 2012 season opener was held at the Graham Claxton Reserve on the River Murray at Cadell, South Australia. 13 Teams registered for the event, 9 of which made the trip early to get in a pre-fish & enjoy the hospitality put on by the club in what can only be described as perfect weather for a few quiet drinks & a BBQ!

Those teams who ventured out on Saturday for a pre-fish found the conditions to be tough in the heat but a few legal Golden perch were boated including a ripper by Team Megabass which went nearly 50cm. Water clarity was not great due to an increase in flows but once again it has been proven that you can get a fish to eat a lure no matter what the conditions!

Competition day dawned with heavier winds ripping through the area than predicted, so this was to be an even tougher day to be on the water for our determined anglers. Certainly a swim was on the agenda for many to keep the body temperature down as well as plenty of cool drinks.

So at 7.30am the horn was sounded by club president Gary Bald & 13 boats ranging from the humble dingy to high powered tournament boats roared off upstream & downstream in search of their quarry. The few boats I spoke to during the session had been doing it tough as were we, so we knew it would be a close competition come the end of the fishing session at 2.30pm.

At the end of the day first place honours as well as the Big Fish cash bonus went to Team Deviants, Graham Whibley & Steve Flynn. Graham caught his 38.5 cm Golden Perch late morning not far from lock 2 on a black/white 60mm AC Invader. They used their sounder to locate a school of fish in a back eddy & cast at it until it yielded a result.

2nd place went to Team Megabass, Tom Deer & Bridget Wright. Another excellent result for this team who have only been fishing the river with lures for a very short time. 33.5 cm was the length of Tom’s fish which fell to a Megabass Deep X 150 in Setsuki Ayu colour ,cast between 2 pieces of timber late in the session.

3rd place was awarded via random key tag draw to team Yellow Fever, Tony Martin & Andrew Donhardt. Despite not landing a legal Golden Perch, the boys did catch 4 carp on fly to help pass the time & put a bend in the rod.

The only other fish reported during the session was a 31cm Golden perch caught by Joel Whitburn of team Lure Project. Whilst not a legal fish therefore not counting for the photo event prizes, it still earned Joel 25 points towards the LMLFC Angler of the Year Award.

A big thank you to all the committee for their hard work to get the season up & running & for all those who lent a hand on the weekend itself. Well done to all our competitors who fished the event in great spirit & made it yet another memorable weekend on the beautiful Murray River.

Thank you to all our event & club sponsors for your continued support, ensuring we can provide great prizes for our dedicated anglers:

LURE PROJECT, WILD COAST MAGAZINE, WINTULICHS METWURST, PACIFIC MARINE, COMPLEAT ANGLER, WEAVERS LURES, PLATYPUS FISHING LINES, TUCKER TIME LURES, AC LURES, OUTLAW SPINNER BAITS, SWEET WATER LURES, FISHING TACKLE & TECHNIQUES MAGAZINE, BALLS N ALL SPINNER BAITS, FISHERMANS PARADISE, SPOT ON TACKLE NURIOOTPA, GOT ONE MILDURA, LURESTRIKE LURES, JD/EDDY LURES, TOP CATCH BARMERA, MURRAY FISHER LURES, AERIAL SUNGLASSES.

Cheers
Simon Cardone on behalf of the Lower Murray Lure Fishing Club.
