Post Crazy Shark
Went out in the Tamar River estuary today chasing some Trevalla that have been running.
Had a good day getting my bag of 20 but whilst on the water I had a monster 7 gill shark come up and grab my bag of fish I had tied on the side of the boat.
I dont usually do this out at sea but ive never seen a shark of this calibre in so close to shore and that far up the estuary.
7 gillers are generally nocturnal feeders but let me tell ya this bugger didnt know that
I would estimate him to be between 10 and 12 ft long and in the 100 + kilo weight range easily.
I managed to restle my fish away from him before he did any damage to the bag but that got him real fired up, he came up behind the boat and had a good old chew on the outboard stingray fin and then decided the burly pot full of chook pellets and tuna oil looked tasty.
I had another tug of war to get my pot back, now somewhat different shaped than before but still functional.
The last straw was he started grabbing Trevalla I had on so to get rid of him I rigged a head of one up on a 8 kilo outfit and he towed me round for half an hr before busting me off.
I dont think he even knew he was hooked as he came straight back looking for more fish to steel sop I decided to leave him to it :?
Ive had Makos get a bit nasty whilst targetting them but this was a first for me.

They are a funny looking shark, like a cross between a Tiger and a Thresher.
Big broad head with squared off nose, and a big long tail.
Lovely big spotts all over the back, very pretty if it wasnt so menacing.
Never heard of anyone crossing paths with one of these like that in my life.
They are normally only caught on big baits night fishing from beaches etc.

Certainly one for the memory bank.
Bill I dont think even Tiger would have handled this brute

Crazy stuff JD, better pack a bigger rod next time mate!

I would have just about crapped myself and been out of there real quick :o

"Bill I don’t think even Tiger would have handled this brute " Yer but it would have made a great photo.

Tiger vs The Shark a play off to see who is toughest! They have already tried to be better then the other at other things, golf, yachts, extra marital affairs!

Don't let Tiger here you say that about him

Sounds like you had fun JD even if the big fella did try and steal your tea ;)

Ive had a Mako or two come up and have a chew on the chug pot and saw one scoff a mesh bag full of Burly log but this is a first for me with the old submersible burly pot on a string
Pot top was as round as a good size bucket and the bugger had the entire thing in his mouth
I thought it was a gooner for sure but he spat it out, a bit bent and chewed but still OK.
The Trevalla he knicked wasnt so lucky :? One way trip for that poor bugger.
Its a common sight in the tropics but very rare here in the cold water to get this up close and personal with one like that.
Great thing to see but a pain in the bum for your fishing

He must of been very hungry, wouldn't be a common occurrence I'd say. Have landed a few in Western Port bay and have been bitten of a number of times guessing they were the culprits although WP is known for lots of toothy critters.
Cheers
